His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Honourary President of the Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation (BMMAF), stressed that the National MMA team participation in the first edition of the 2017 International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Asian Open Championships, from June 12 – 16, will have a positive impact on promoting Bahraini MMA, at a continental level. His Highness is simultaneously looking forward at the team achieving outstanding results in this participation.
His Highness said: “The participation of the National Amateur MMA team in the Asian Championship is an opportunity to really prepare fighters, gain more experience, friction and develop their combat capabilities. This raises the level of combat and contributes to their serious preparation for the upcoming important championship which will be hosted by Bahrain in November. We will focus on achieving an honourable result that confirms Bahrain’s advanced level which contributes to enhancing its global position in this sport.”
HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa praised the role played by the IMMAF, headed by Mr. Kerrith Brown, in spreading MMA sport across the continent through the Federation’s agenda by launching activities, events and championships around the world and seeking to build bridges of cooperation with the federations under the umbrella of the International Federation, which is clearly reflected in the implementation of the vision to develop the sport.
His Highness also praised the outstanding efforts of the BMMAF under the chairmanship of HE Colonel Khalid Abdulaziz Al Khayyat, in implementing a development strategy that is outlined by His Highness, to continue work towards the advancing this sport through establishing programmes and launching official competitions that create the appropriate atmosphere to encourage young Bahrainis to practice, and also becoming a base for participation in various continental and international championships.
HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa said: “I have great confidence in the fighters of the national team to present an honourable performance and compete to achieve advanced positions in this participation. The team includes fighters with distinguished combat records, most notably, fighter Hussain Ayyad, who has won two bronze medals achieved at the first European Open Championship that was held British city of Birmingham and the second Championships which was held in in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, and we hope that everyone will achieve honourable results that will add to Bahrain’s MMA record.”
